Maternity and Well Baby Classes

Bay Area Hospital improves the health of our community through classes and other events that teach about coping with health problems, staying well, and improving your health. We offer educational opportunities for the community, including:

Our experienced nurses work closely with you and your healthcare provider to give you support throughout your pregnancy.

    • Breastfeeding Class April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18, October 16, November 20, December 18.  Wednesdays 6-8pm Myrtle room at hospital.
    • One Day Labor Class – April 14, May 12, June 9, July  21, August 18, September 15, October 13, November 10, December 8.  Sundays 2-6pm Myrtle room at hospital. For patients over 35 weeks gestation or later on the date of class
    • Infant Safety/CPR/Newborn Care Class – May 20, July 15, September 16, November 18. Mondays 6 to 8 p.m., Myrtle room at hospital

Cancer Support Groups

Our Cancer Support Groups are offered as follows:

  • Cancer Support Group: 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. at the South Coast Hospice & Palliative Care Services Community Bereavement & Education Center located at 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay (first building on the left as you enter)
  • Breast Cancer: The 2nd and 4th Friday of each month from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the South Coast Hospice & Palliative Care Services Community Bereavement & Education Center located at 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay (first building on the left as you enter)

Classes

Bay Area Hospital offers a diabetes self-management program designed to help you understand and manage your diabetes. This program consists of four classes and one individual appointment with a registered dietitian. To enroll, you must have a referral from a physician/ healthcare provider.

Topics include:

  • What is diabetes?
  • blood sugar testing
  • nutrition: meal planning, eating out and carbohydrate counting
  • medications
  • hypoglycemia
  • exercise
  • what to do when you’re ill
  • complications and foot care
  • effects of stress on diabetes
  • self-management
  • support and resources

South Coast Striders is an ongoing opportunity to share some time exploring the beautiful area of the South Coast of Oregon while enjoying the company of others. You can hike either short or long distances, but make sure to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can sign in and learn more about the hike. All events are FREE.

Be tobacco free! Instruction and support can help you quit for good. Bay Area Hospital offers a free “Stop Tobacco Use Clinic.” This is a four class series and alternates months offering day classes and evening classes. Sessions are the first 4 Thursdays of the month. No registration required.

Day classes: 12 to 1:00 pm in January, March, May, July, Sept, and Nov (no Jan classes).

Evening Classes: 5:30 to 6:30 pm in Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct, and Dec.

The Breast Cancer Support Group has resumed meeting at the South Coast Hospice & Palliative Care Services Community Bereavement & Education Center. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Bay Area Cancer Center is hosting a support group to help you live well with breast cancer. This support group is for those who have breast cancer, or are a support person for someone with breast cancer.
