BAH Physician Appears At Top Cancer Event

COOS BAY – Bay Area Hospital’s radiation oncologist participated in a prestigious cancer conference this month.

Dr. Mark Henderson gave an invited presentation at the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s annual meeting in San Francisco. The ASTRO meeting, which draws more than 11,000 attendees each year, is known as the premier radiation oncology scientific event in the world.

This year’s conference theme was “Targeting Cancer: Technology & Biology.” Dr. Henderson was an invited discussant in a scientific session on palliative care.

“The ASTRO meeting provides an opportunity to learn about the latest advances in cancer care,” Dr. Henderson said. “The palliative care session concentrated on the ways that radiotherapy can be used to provide comfort to patients with incurable cancers, which is an important part of the practice of radiation oncology.”

Dr. Henderson is medical director of Bay Area Hospital’s radiation oncology program and an adjunct associate professor of radiation medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Before coming to the Oregon Coast this year, he was an assistant professor of clinical radiation oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
