Our Lab

We provide the around-the-clock analysis essential to accurate diagnosis and treatment. Our laboratory provides full-service diagnostic testing for both inpatients and outpatients. Accredited by the College of American Pathologists, our medical laboratory scientists, and medical laboratory technicians are trained to perform, assess, and report hematology, coagulation, blood bank, chemistry, urinalysis, and microbiology tests.

Service History

Bay Area Hospital’s lab was renovated in 2001 when the new Emergency Department was expanded.  In 2024, a brand-new state-of-the-art Ortho Vitros 7600XT automation system was installed streamlining lab analysis and reducing processing time.

Services for Patients

COVID-19 Tests

The laboratory offers COVID-19 testing options for inpatients or those who have a provider’s referral (in the form of Antigen or PCR) with same day results.

Pathology

The pathology department processes tissues and biopsies to determine if there is a malignancy or other disease processes going on. Pathologists determine their findings using various techniques including microscopes, special stains, and genetic testing.

Microbiology

Microbiologists culture specimens from potential infection sites looking for bacterial, fungal, and/or viral infectious agents. Infectious bacteria can then be tested against different antibiotics to determine effective drug treatments.

Blood Bank

This department performs blood types on patients that may need to receive a transfusion due to blood loss or anemia. The technologist will “crossmatch” the patient’s blood with the donor’s blood to find compatible blood products for the transfusion. Our blood donor supply comes from the American Red Cross, which routinely holds blood drives in our community.

Coagulation

This department performs complete blood counts (CBCs) and differentials on blood and body fluids using automated analyzer microscopes. CBCs are one of the most common laboratory tests requested by providers because providers obtain information such as white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count/hemoglobin, and platelet count all at once.

Other Services

Industrial drug screen collection services are also available. More extensive referral resting is provided by Mayo Clinic Laboratories and our other reference lab partners.

Hematology

This department performs complete blood counts (CBCs) and differentials on blood and body fluids using automated analyzer microscopes. CBCs are one of the most common laboratory tests requested by providers because providers obtain information such as white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count/hemoglobin, and platelet count all at once.

Chemistry

This department uses automated analyzers to test for metabolic chemicals, hormones, and drugs from plasma and serum. Some common tests include: cholesterol, lipid panels, potassium, cardiac markers, pregnancy, thyroid, and substance use testing.
