Bay Area Hospital improves the health of our community through classes and other events that teach about coping with health problems, staying well, and improving your health. We offer many educational opportunities for the community, including:

  • Maternity/Well Baby Classes: Our experienced nurses work closely with you and your healthcare provider to give you support throughout your pregnancy.
    • Breastfeeding Class  November 15, December 20. Wednesdays 6-8pm
    • One Day Labor Class – November 12, December 10, Sundays 2-6pm Myrtle room at hospital. For patients over 35 weeks gestation or later on the date of class
    • Infant Safety/CPR/Newborn Care Class – November 27. Mondays 6 to 8 p.m., Myrtle room at hospital

We provide continuing professional and medical education, such as advanced life support, to our healthcare providers, and varied in-services and workshops.

There are also many support groups in our community that can help you cope with challenging health issues.

Classes

Protection of Children – Stewards of Children® is a nationally acclaimed, evidence-based curriculum from the Darkness to Light organization. (Click here for an informative video.) Kids’ HOPE Center believes that through partnership and education, we can improve the lives of our community’s children. This free training is recommended not only for individuals who work with children through their professions, but to any adult who feels responsible for protecting a child.

Individualized private training also is available for businesses, parent groups, churches, and other organizations. When requested in advance, workshops, and materials can be provided in Spanish. Please call Kids’ HOPE Center at (541) 266-8806 to reserve your individual spot in a monthly workshop, or to schedule a workshop for your group.

Classes are offered the fourth Tuesday of every month, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Kids’ HOPE Center.

If you have been told that you are a “borderline” diabetic, prediabetic, or glucose intolerant, or if you have diabetes in your family, are overweight and don’t exercise, have high blood pressure, or high triglycerides and cholesterol, you may be at risk for developing diabetes. This class will teach you how to make a few simple lifestyle changes that can slow or prevent the progression towards diabetes.

Bay Area Hospital offers FREE monthly diabetes review classes on the first Tuesday of every month from noon to 1:30 p.m. These classes are designed to help you understand and manage your diabetes and find out what’s new and what may have changed in diabetes care.

Monthly topics include:

  • how to get exercise into your life (January and August)
  • meal planning (May and December)
  • kidney care (March, June and October)
  • medications (April and September)
  • low blood sugar, avoiding complications, foot care (November)
  • guest speaker TBA (November)

Bay Area Hospital offers FREE diabetes blood glucose screening on the fourth Thursday of every month from 9 to 10 a.m.

Blood sugar screening available each month. You should be screened if you: have a family history of diabetes, are over 45, are overweight, are inactive, have high blood pressure, have elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels, OR have a history of high blood sugar. For an accurate screening, you must fast for at least 6 hours before the test (including no coffee or tea) OR arrive approximately two hours after the start of breakfast.

Bay Area Hospital offers a diabetes self-management program designed to help you understand and manage your diabetes. This program consists of four classes and one individual appointment with a registered dietitian. To enroll, you must have a referral from a physician/ healthcare provider.

Strong Heart Program

Strong Heart Program
Heart failure is a chronic illness, but it doesn’t have to disrupt your lifestyle.  Bay Area Hospital offers a life-enhancing program of education and support to help patients manage their illness.
The Strong Heart Program is available free to anyone with a current or previous diagnosis of heart failure. Its goal is to keep heart-failure patients healthy and active, by educating patients and family members about coping with the illness.

Bay Area Hospital offers FREE kidney care classes on the first Tuesday of March and October from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Chronic kidney disease is the progressive loss of kidney function. Simple diet and lifestyle changes can slow down and sometimes even stop this progression. Speakers from Fresenius Dialysis Center will offer tips and advice. Family members or support persons are encouraged to attend.

South Coast Striders is an ongoing opportunity to share some time exploring the beautiful area of the South Coast of Oregon while enjoying the company of others. You can hike either short or long distances, but make sure to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can sign in and learn more about the hike. All events are FREE.

Be tobacco free! Instruction and support can help you quit for good. Bay Area Hospital offers a free “Stop Tobacco Use Clinic.” This is a four class series and alternates months offering day classes and evening classes. Sessions are the first 4 Thursdays of the month. No registration required.

Day classes: 12 to 1:00 pm in January, March, May, July, Sept, and Nov (no Jan classes).

Evening Classes: 5:30 to 6:30 pm in Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct, and Dec.

The Breast Cancer Support Group has resumed meeting at the South Coast Hospice & Palliative Care Services Community Bereavement & Education Center.
